CHEAPVOIP: From UCAN's Newsletter 24 Inflation Busting Ideas
VOIP stands for "Voice Over Internet Protocol" and it is a relatively NEW way of using your computer to make cheaper long distance phone calls. To use it, you will need a high-speed Internet connection to get phone service over the Internet instead of using a traditional phone company like AT&T. Most people use VOIP to compliment their landline or cellular phone service.
VOIP phone companies offer lower rates than old-fashioned phone companies, but many do not offer 911 service, phone directory listings, 411 service, etc. In addition, the VOIP provider is only as reliable as your broadband connection. UCAN uses a VOIP connectionb and sometimes (although it is rare) our conversations sound garbled or "voipy." FOr example, "Thank you for calling UCAN" might come out sounding like "youkthan forcall UCANing."
